For Brides – Steven Khalil Q&A
This week my newspaper column chats to wedding gown and red carpet frock designer Steven Khalil.
Paddington-based Steven Khalil is one of Australia’s leading bridal couturiers and his designs include flowing skins. flattering cuts and beautiful detail.
1. How long have you been designing?
I’ve been desingning for 18 years now, first discovering my passion for design at the age of seven.
2. Did you study fashion design?
Yes. I did a total of three and a half years study at college Focusing my attention on garment construction and bridal couture.
3. Which celebrities have you dressed?
I have had the privilege of working with many notable Australian celebrities. including Kate Ritchie, Sonia Kruger, Ada Nicodemou, Melissa Doyle, Rebecca Gibney and most recently dressing Tessa James for her December wedding to footballer Nate Myles
4. Which celebrities would you love to dress?
Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams and Kate Winslet, just to name a few.
5. What inspires you?
My inspirations come from everywhere in my life, internal influences such as emotion and mood, as well as external influences such as textures. vintage pieces. Photography, art and basically anything that evokes beauty.
6. How long have you been baud in Paddington?
Nine years. I felt It was the most suitable location for my flag-ship store as it accommodated the majority of my clientele being within the eastern suburbs and the tree-lined streets and overall creative atmosphere represented the brand perfectly.
7. What is your best advice for a bride looking for that perfect dress?
Wear a gown that represent your personal style. Don’t necessarily follow trends, focus on what suits you, always be open to listening to advice from your designer, and most of all wear a gown that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
8. Favourite local cafe?
I often drink my piccolo at Gusto, as it’s close by and filled with friendly staff.
9. Favourite local restaurant?
So many goad ones to choose from.
10. Favourite local Bar?
Bar 10 on William St.
