New York Fashion Week Spring 2015 highlights.

This is my first ever New York fashion week. As I sit in the shows I’m constantly pinching myself, it really is a life long dream to be here, so apologies if this post sounds super fluffy. Below are my favourite show moments, the key trends that I’m seeing and in an upcoming post, I will break down how you can recreate the look on a budget. <! Tommy Hilfiger – With the music festival girl as his muse, Tommy Hilfiger channels his longtime love of rock-and-roll for his Spring 2015 collection. The look is a glamorous riff on the vintage rock style of his favorite iconic musicians of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The collection features Tommy’s signature color palette, given an edgy remix in deep, moody hues with metallic pops. Embellished concert tees, eclectic vintage buttons, and brocade taping on band jackets, pea coats, and flared trousers evoke a nostalgic King’s Road attitude. Sixties-era military tailoring is seen throughout the collection as a nod to theatrical Sgt. Pepper style. Familiar Tommy classics get a rocker twist – the breton striped t-shirt is finished with gold bullion trim and done in an airy silk jersey, and jeans and jean jackets inspired by his ‘70s archival pieces are reinterpreted in a patchwork of selvedge denim. A series of translucent washed silk chiffon dresses printed with playful tattoo graphics, lots of star prints. A spray of constellations punctuate the collection via suede skirts and dresses in classic A-line shapes. In fact a line shapes have appeared in most shows. IMG_3587.PNG Reem Acra – showed gorgeous dresses, featuring embellishment, cut out details, sheer insert detailing, prints and 50’s inspired full skirts. IMG_3594.JPG Carolina Herrera – inspired by flowers, dressed featured stunning floral prints, big bold florals and I love her experimentation with pieces of foam like fabric stuck onto ballgowns, almost mosaic like. A simply exquisite collection. IMG_3606.JPG Alexander Wang – his super sporty luxe collection means the trend won’t be going anywhere in a hurry. Divine bomber jackets, mesh details, body con dresses in popping colours. IMG_3613.JPG Zimmermann – the collection saw a masculine meets feminine vibe. Tailoring mixed with softer lines. There was delicate shapes, metallics, printed silks, lace, soft drape trench coat (a big trend developing), pleats and long a-line skirts (both big trends). IMG_3617.JPG Donna Karan – loved this show as it was so wearable by real women. Flattering a-line shirts and dresses. Prints inspired by street art, brush stroke prints, belted silhouettes (my favourite thing ever, so flattering on all women), pops of red and printed pencil skirts. Bravo!! Stunning. IMG_3623.JPG Lie Sangbong – I had not heard of this designer before, but I was very impressed by their butterfly inspired collection, yummy prints, soft drape trench coat, pleated a-line skirts and love the corset over a crisp white shirt. IMG_3004.JPG Iconic American label Michael Korrs showed a divine collection. A-line skirts ruled supreme. Prints and light sheer fabrics and more midrifts IMG_3848-0.JPG Key trends: 1) A-line skirts: both fuller 50’s style, knee length, midi length and long floaty maxi skirts. If I had to pick a must have skirt for the season, I would suggest just below the knee a-line pleated style skirt. 2) Embellishment continues to be popular, sequins, beading, oversized gemstones. On that note metallics are still popular. 3) Keep doing them crunches as flashes of midriffs are still happening. 4) Sheer fabrics, lace details and cut out details. 5) Prints – star prints, polka dots, gingham, florals and geometric.
